What have you got your mic in to get that lovely wind howl but no thunderous buffeting?

A Rycote baby ballgag – I worry about those guys, but that’s what they call it. It’s far more expensive than the skanky X/Y mic I run in it. I’m on the lookout for an XY mic with a 22mm shaft that would fit, there’s an AT XY mic that might be low-ish nose and suitable, but for now its a Marantz ECM-8 glued into some 22mm OD plastic electrical conduit.
You can get rid of some of the wind noise by using a furry windjammer, but my budget didn’t stretch that far yet. And on this recording the wind noise sort of worked for me, though I had to get real low to get the balance right. Since the wind noise is still an artifact of the mic (it sounds much mroe dramatic than it did in real life) I didn’t post this to the UK Soundmap, but it conveys the feel of the occasion beter as it was breezy as heck.
It has the right sound to me. Definitely east coast windy estuary!
This is beautiful, I can almost feel the breeze from the river cooling me down as I sit sweating in Australia. Do you have a longer version of this – love to hear more.

This was the longest section I could fish out from the recording as I don’t have the furry cover to the windgag – every so often a gust would come along and give me wind blast. Having said that at times it was hard to stand still in the wind so I’ve chuffed to get anything there.
